What a freight broker actually does
A freight broker sits between shippers with freight and carriers with capacity. Instead of calling around for trucks, vetting authority and insurance, and chasing status updates, you hand the lane to one team that owns the outcome.
Varstar Alliance is a licensed freight broker with an asset-based approach: we do not own the trucks, but we operate with the accountability, carrier commitment, and lane ownership of an asset-based provider. That means every load gets the right carrier - and the same level of care as if it were moving on our own fleet.
- Sourcing and vetting the right carrier for each lane and commodity
- Negotiating and benchmarking rates against live market data
- Booking, dispatching and tracking the load end to end
- Managing paperwork - BOL, POD, customs documents, claims
- Solving problems mid-transit before they become missed deliveries
Asset-based brokerage without the fleet
Traditional asset-based providers own their trucks, which caps them to the equipment they have and the lanes they already run. Varstar Alliance brings the same ownership mindset without owning the equipment: we source, vet, dispatch, and track through a network of 40,000+ vetted carriers, so capacity scales with your volume and the equipment always matches the load.
Traditional asset-based provider
Owns its trucks, but coverage is capped by fleet size and equipment mix - and your load competes with theirs for those trucks.
Varstar - asset-based brokerage
No trucks of our own, but asset-based discipline. 40,000+ vetted carriers across every equipment type, scaled to your volume and your lane.

Freight broker FAQs
What does a freight broker do?
A freight broker connects shippers who need to move goods with carriers who have capacity. The broker sources and vets carriers, negotiates rates, books and dispatches the load, tracks it in transit, and handles the paperwork and any exceptions along the way. You get one point of contact instead of managing dozens of carrier relationships.
Is Varstar Alliance a broker or a carrier?
Varstar Alliance is a licensed freight broker. We do not own or operate the trucks ourselves - we source capacity from a network of 40,000+ vetted third-party carriers and manage the shipment end to end on your behalf. We bring an asset-based mindset to brokerage: long-term carrier relationships, dedicated lane accountability, and the same ownership of outcomes as if the trucks were ours.
What does asset-based brokerage mean if you do not own trucks?
Asset-based usually refers to providers that own their own fleet. At Varstar Alliance, we run an asset-based brokerage model: we do not own the trucks, but we operate with the discipline, carrier commitment, and lane accountability of an asset-based provider. That means dedicated capacity planning, deep carrier partnerships, and treating every load as if it were moving on our own equipment - while keeping the flexibility to match the right carrier to every lane.
How much does a freight broker cost?
Broker pricing is built into the all-in rate you are quoted - there is no separate fee to you as the shipper. The rate reflects lane, equipment type, distance, commodity, timing and current market conditions. We quote all-in so there are no surprise accessorials after delivery.
Are freight brokers licensed and insured?
Legitimate freight brokers hold FMCSA broker authority and carry a $75,000 surety bond. Varstar Alliance is fully licensed and bonded, and we verify authority, insurance and safety scores on every carrier we dispatch.
How fast can you get a truck?
For most standard lanes we can cover a load same day, and expedited freight can often be dispatched within hours. Send us the lane, equipment type and pickup window and you will get a quote back quickly.
Do you handle cross-border freight between the US and Canada?
Yes. Cross-border is a core specialty. We are headquartered in the Detroit area and run the Michigan-Ontario corridor daily, coordinating customs brokerage, PARS/PAPS documentation and bonded moves end to end.
